Slumdog Millionaire

slumdog-poster3

Starring: Dev Patel, Irfan Khan, Anil Kapoor, Madhur Mittal, Freida Pinto
Director: Danny Boyle
Screenwriter: Simon Beaufoy
Producer: Christian Colson
Composer: A.R. Rahman

Synopsis:

British director Danny Boyle takes another intriguing career turn with this heartfelt underdog tale. Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) is a street kid (or “slumdog”) who has landed an appearance on India’s version of the hit TV game show WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE? Jamal exceeds expectations on the show, and the producers alert the police after they become suspicious of his methods. The young contestant is subsequently arrested and is interrogated at the hands of a nameless police inspector (played by Bollywood star Irfan Khan). As the interrogation proceeds, Boyle tells Jamal’s story through harrowing flashbacks that both show the terrible poverty of Mumbai and help explain how he knew the answers to the MILLIONAIRE questions. SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE is a tightly woven story that has been expertly edited into shape. The contrast between Jamal’s upbringing and his chance of escaping it on the show are adeptly juxtaposed. Mumbai is portrayed as a place of terrifying poverty and unforgettable brutality, and Jamal and his brother get into a never-ending succession of challenging situations. But the way Boyle ties together Jamal’s life experiences with his answers on the show is quite brilliant, and the film really does run the full gamut of emotions as we see him growing up, falling in love, coming close to death, and teetering on the brink of escaping from his terrible predicament. The film belongs to Boyle’s cast, who are mostly unknown outside of India. Patel, in particular, gives a startlingly mature performance that audiences are likely to remember long after the credits role on this affecting feature.

K-Movie – The Chaser

Ex-cop pimp Jung-ho is irritated because his girls keep disappearing without clearing their debts. One night, he gets a call from a customer and sends Mi-jin. Jung-ho realizes the phone number of the customer matches that of the calls the missing girls got last. As something smells fishy, he searches for her. During his search, Jung-ho dents a car in the alley. When Jung-ho spots blood splattered on the driver’s shirt, he senses the man, Young-min, is the suspect. After an intense chase, Jung-ho catches Young-min. But because of Jung-ho’s pretense as a cop, they are both taken to the police station. At the station, the man bluntly confesses he has killed the missing women, and the last girl, Mi-jin, may still be alive. As the whole police force is obsessed with a random search for corpses, Jung-ho is the only one who believes Mi-jin is still alive. With only 12 hours left to detain the serial killer without a warrant, Jung-ho’s hunt begins, searching for Mi-jin entrapped in a place nobody knows. (Synopsis from RUKorean)

This is another great action movie that I have seen after Typhoon and Running Wild. The ending is quite unexpected but I don’t want to spoil it here!! :) . This is the 2nd best selling film in Korea till September 2008. So, I bet this is a ‘must see’ movie or you’ll regret it later!

K-Movie – Humming

Jun-seo is tired of the relationship he is in with Mi-yeon. But one day she is in an accident and falls into a coma. Then, unbelievably Mi-yeon visits him the next day just like any other ordinary day. He starts searching for other traces of Mi-yeon and realizes how much he loved her. (Synopsis from KoreanMovie)

This is very recommended movie especially for those who likes sad movies (including me la.. hehe). I almost cry whenever I see how hard Jun-seo is trying to  meet Mi-yeon again. For me, the saddest scent is when Jun-seo threw all his books and clothes just to find a card that Mi-yeon left to him. There’s also a scent when Jun-seo reminds Mi-yeon’s friends to call him whenever they see her. They must though that Jun-seo is crazy right? He did all that although he knew that Mi-yeon is in coma. So, what else can I say? That’s the prove of his love to Mi-yeon..

The Spiderwick Chronicles

I’ve watched this movie with my sister and niece last night. This movie really surpass our expectation. At first we think this is just an average movie but in the middle when Jared meets Thimbletack who explains about a magical world around them, this movie started to be interesting. The adventurous journey begin and without realize it, they had discovered something that is really important. Here, I’ve added just a simple synopsis written by Anthony Pereyra.

Once upon a time, upon moving into the run-down Spiderwick Estate with their mother, twin brothers Jared and Simon Grace, along with their sister Mallory, find themselves pulled into an alternate world full of faeries and other creatures. Unable to explain the strange disappearances and accidents that seem to be happening on a daily basis, the family blames it all on Jared. When he, Simon and Mallory investigate what’s really going on, they uncover the fantastic truth of the Spiderwick estate and of the creatures that inhabit it.
